NVUSD Raises LGBTQ Rainbow Flags for Pride Month

prideFor the second year in a row, Napa Valley Unified School District will raise LGBTQ rainbow flags at district offices and its 28 school sites. In celebration of, and solidarity with, the LGBTQ NVUSD community, flags will be displayed from June 1 through June 18, the last day of school. It also unveiled a new Pride logo.

In May 2020, NVUSD Board members unanimously approved the flying of the rainbow flag on school-owned poles in the district, which serves students in Napa, American Canyon and Yountville.

“NVUSD is fortunate to have a wonderfully diverse population and we are proud to demonstrate support for our LGBTQ students, staff and people across the Napa Valley and American Canyon communities,” Said Superintendent Dr. Rosanna Mucetti.” As a symbol of inclusion, these flags represent our commitment to ensuring school environments are safe and inclusive for all our students. 

Other events happening around the district this month include student-led assemblies, recommended reading lists and non-discrimination study materials. In addition, NVUSD has partnered with members of the Rainbow Action Network (RAN) to bring “Rainbow Kits” to NVUSD elementary school classrooms. Developed by the Rainbow Action Network and First 5 Napa Network, the kits include a collection of tools and information to support early childhood educators in making their classrooms inclusive. 

Raising the flag is aligned with the district’s equity policy and nondiscrimination/ anti harassment policy as well as Board Resolution 19-30, adopted in June of 2019.

The district has also recently completed a comprehensive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Plan that will be presented to the Board in June.
